Welcome to the Beginning

Happy Bookday to me!  August 29th 2017, An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors finally became officially available. It’s been spotted in the wild at bookstores across the country.

Here we are at the beginning. The beginning of the series and hopefully the beginning of a career. One thing I’d like to comment on is how, for all that writing is a fundamentally lonely endeavor, it takes many people and an enormous amount of effort to create a book.

First there are my beloved critiquers, without whom I would be quite dramatically lost. They keep the story from going off the rails in its infancy and gently steer it, by way of rivers of red ink, to being the best work of fiction it can be.

Then comes my agent, who does all the legwork or actually selling the thing as well as providing another round of critical feedback. Without her expert guidance with contracts, I would likely end up buying a timeshare in Guatemala instead of selling a book.

Then comes my editor, who pitched the manuscript to the editorial board and provided even more valuable feedback on the story.

Then there was the copy editor, and the art director, and the cover artist, the layout person, the publicity director, and many more who are obscure to me, the list goes on and on.

To all of those people I give thanks.  I also give thanks to friendly bookstore owners who stock their shelves with my books and arrange book-signings for me. Also to the bloggers who interview me and the podcast teams who have me on as a guest.

Every writer lives in a web of interdependencies without which they cannot stand. I suspect this holds true even for self-published authors, who cultivate the same sorts of relationships, just by different avenues.

We do all this for the sake of making yet one more connection, to the reader, so that they can share in the grand adventure we have prepared for them.

Now I ask you to join us.  Buckle on your rapier, tilt your hat at a jaunty angle, sharpen your wits and step aboard.

An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors awaits.

Cover Reveal!

An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors

This is the amazing cover of An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors, the first book in my trilogy starring Isabelle Des Zephyrs, the Polymath Princess and her faithful musketeer Jean-Claude.

In a world of soaring continents  and bottomless skies,  where a burgeoning new science lifts skyships  into the cloud-strewn heights, and ancient blood-borne sorceries cling to a fading glory, Princess Isabelle des Zephyrs is about to be married to a man she has barely heard of, the second son of a dying king in an empire sliding toward civil war.

Born without the sorcery that is her birthright, but with a perspicacious  intellect and insight to spare, Isabelle hopes her marriage will stave off the disastrous conflict and bring her opportunity and influence.  But the last two women betrothed to this prince were murdered, and a sorcerer-assassin is bent on making Isabelle the third.  Fiercely defended by her brave and loyal musketeer, Jean-Claude, Isabelle plunges into a great maze of prophecy, intrigue, and betrayal, where everyone wears masks of glamor and lies.  Step by dangerous step, she unravels the plot of an immortal madman intent on destroying the world and using Isabelle to remake it in his own twisted image.

Coming from Tor Books in August 2017.

The artwork is by Thom Tenery, who has done work on such projects as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Oblivion.

Princess Isabelle des Zephyrs

IsabelleVeiledSketch01Princess Isabelle des Zephyrs is the main character of my forthcoming novel, An Alchemy of Masques of Mirrors.  She’s first cousin once removed to the king, and a brilliant polymath who would like very much to get on with solving the deep questionf of the universe… if only people would stop trying to assassinate her.

Hello World

On November 6th, 2015, I was lucky enough to sign a contract with Tor Books for the publication of my first fantasy trilogy: the stories set in the magical world of the Risen Kingdoms.

Over the coming months, I will increase the functionality of this website, link it in to all sorts of social media and make it the place to go for for my brand of flintlock fantasy.
